Bee Hive

I was on my usual afternoon walk when I came across a large layer of a honey comb on the ground in front of me. When I looked up into the trees there it was in all its glory! I HUGE bee hive. I had never seen one before in real life and it was magnificent.

There were a few bees still flying around, but I get the feeling that pest control came in and sprayed them with poison. There were quite a few bee carcases on the ground more than there were live ones flying around. The birds were everywhere trying to get at the dying bees in the trees. It was a bit sad, but I can understand why someone would want that out of their front yard. Quite a few kids play in the area, and we have had quite a few cases of bee attacks.

What a waste of perfectly good honey! I wasn’t able to get a good picture of the huge hive in the trees, but I managed to get quite a few of the layers of honey comb on the floor.

Delicious Way of Getting Daily Omega-3s

My doctor told me I needed to start consuming more Omega-3 fats. I asked what the easiest way of consuming them was, and he let me know it was by eating fish specifically salmon. I am not very fond of fish. It kind of makes me break out. He suggested I just take cod liver oil or fish oil pills, but they made me feel sick as well. Dennis suggested I take flax seed oil instead of fish oil pills. I tried it and it didn’t taste that bad. I am sure some of you have experience with the wonderful flavor of cod liver oil. Eww… Flax seed oil has this nice nutty flavor to it. I actually liked it!

I don’t take it in pill form. I purchased flax seed oil in a bottle. Yesterday, I had the wonderful idea of mixing my flax seed oil daily requirement with a little bit of vinegar and pepper to make a dip similar to the Italian bread dipping oils they serve at restaurants. I figured it would taste pretty good since the only difference is the type of oil used. I tried it and it tasted wonderfully. Now, I get my Omega-3s in a very delicious and quick way without having to eat fish. I know there are more people that love fish that don’t, but this quick recipe is for the ones that just don’t care for it too much.

Flax Seed Daily Omega-3 Bread Dip

• 1/2 ounce of Flax Seed Oil (Daily recommended amount from your doctor)

• 1/4 ounce Balsamic Vinegar

• Black Pepper to taste

• 1 slice of toasted Dark Rye Bread

You are going to mix the flax seed oil, balsamic vinegar and pepper in a flat plate and serve. I actually take quite a bit of Omega-3s daily, but everyone should consult their own physician before they decide on how much to take. This is just how much my doctor asked me to take daily.

Memorial Day

I hope everyone had a very wonderful memorial day. Ours was filled with lots of packing and organizing. We are getting our stuff together for our house hunting trip. Unfortunately, we discovered we had to give quite a bit of stuff away since it won’t travel well. I have quite a few candles and decorations that can’t go. Additionally, we will be selling our beetle. Sad times, but I figure we are getting a wonderful opportunity to have a fabulous adventure. I’ll keep you posted.

Terra Plana Recycled Material Shoes

Dennis found this fabulous company that evidently creates some of their shoes out of recycled materials. Additionally, they have a line of shoe called Vivo Barefoot that is intended to re-create the feeling of being barefoot to the wearer. This is certainly friendly to those of us who have very finicky feet. What I loved about them was that they offer eco-friendly created shoes that were very aesthetically pleasing and just plain well designed.

According to Terra Plana, the company creates their shoes using three concepts which include: 21st Century Artisan, Recycled and Barefoot. The 21st Century Artisan concept combines classic shoe making with the use of more modern materials and techniques. The Recycled concept pushes the use of recycled materials in their products. The Barefoot concept gives their barefoot loving customers the ability to the most comfortable shoes in situations where no shoes are inappropriate.

In their Ethics Policy, Terra Plana states that they use a number of eco-friendly materials which include: Chrome free leathers, vegetable tanned leathers, recycled materials, pure latex soling materials, recycled rubber soles and recycled foam foot beds. Additionally, they are using a product called E-leather which is a product that combines fibers of real leather with other textile fibers woven together to create a product which, as the company claims, is indistinguishable from the real deal.

Wow! I haven’t even mentioned their fabulous ad campaign. I am in love with this company right now.

Happy Design

I just watched this video and it was truly fabulous. The speaker is Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, and he tells us about his history with happy design. He discusses a few whimsical stories about his experiences with design, and shares some of his favorite happy advertisements that were subsequently incredibly effective. This talk was truly inspirational. I want to go out and make my own speech bubbles and put them all over Arizona, but I have a feeling I would be arrested pretty quickly. I think we will just keep that idea in the emergency design closet for now.

For those of you who don’t know, TED Talks is a conference that brings together people from the technology, entertainment and design fields. It gives them the opportunity to present and discuss important issues and innovation concerning their industries and the world.
