Delicious Way of Getting Daily Omega-3s

My doctor told me I needed to start consuming more Omega-3 fats. I asked what the easiest way of consuming them was, and he let me know it was by eating fish specifically salmon. I am not very fond of fish. It kind of makes me break out. He suggested I just take cod liver oil or fish oil pills, but they made me feel sick as well. Dennis suggested I take flax seed oil instead of fish oil pills. I tried it and it didn’t taste that bad. I am sure some of you have experience with the wonderful flavor of cod liver oil. Eww… Flax seed oil has this nice nutty flavor to it. I actually liked it!

I don’t take it in pill form. I purchased flax seed oil in a bottle. Yesterday, I had the wonderful idea of mixing my flax seed oil daily requirement with a little bit of vinegar and pepper to make a dip similar to the Italian bread dipping oils they serve at restaurants. I figured it would taste pretty good since the only difference is the type of oil used. I tried it and it tasted wonderfully. Now, I get my Omega-3s in a very delicious and quick way without having to eat fish. I know there are more people that love fish that don’t, but this quick recipe is for the ones that just don’t care for it too much.
Flax Seed Daily Omega-3 Bread Dip
• 1/2 ounce of Flax Seed Oil (Daily recommended amount from your doctor)
• 1/4 ounce Balsamic Vinegar
• Black Pepper to taste
• 1 slice of toasted Dark Rye Bread
You are going to mix the flax seed oil, balsamic vinegar and pepper in a flat plate and serve. I actually take quite a bit of Omega-3s daily, but everyone should consult their own physician before they decide on how much to take. This is just how much my doctor asked me to take daily.

I’m going to try out your recipe because I love bread and want to find healthier ways to eat it than putting butter/margerine (high in omega-6s) on it.
You may also want to check out flax seeds as another way to increase your omega-3s. That way you will benefit from the lignans and fibers as well.
If they don’t match with your pallet, be sure to find some flax oil that includes lignans and fiber.

I will certainly check out flax seeds as an alternative Mike. Thank you for the recommendation. I usually get in 30 grams of fiber a day, but I would much rather get them eating greens and seeds instead of supplements. I do recommend the recipe. It is really tasty.
Susan, that video was awesome! I have been sending a few of my friends and family members articles about the importance of omega-3s, but I don’t think they read them. This is a fabulous way of getting them to pay attention to their health. I have forwarded the video to them. I know a few of their doctors have recommended omega-3s to them, but they refuse to take them. I hope this will change their minds.

Sam H.,
I understand about reluctant friends and relatives. If you want more ammunition in the fight to convert them, read Allport’s book, The Queen of Fats.
At the The Wunders of Flax we try educate people about flax, but Allport is the real “Queen.”

Your dip recipe sounds yummy! I like to grind whole flax seeds in a coffee grinder and sprinkle on yogurt, oatmeal, rice or salad. If you try this be sure to use a clean coffee grinder-I keep one for coffee and one for seeds/nuts/grains. Also be sure to grind fresh and store unused ground flax seeds in the fridge!

Thank you for the advice Kelly. I think my fiancé does something similar to that, but he puts it on his oatmeal in the morning. I need to start doing something like that, but I think I would prefer sprinkling it on yogurt like you suggested.
